The stock skyrocketed nearly 600% from early September 2025 to early June 2026. On June 3, it hit its all-time high of over $637. Since then, it has pulled back hard, dropping roughly 40% to around $378 as of this writing. For the upcoming quarterly report, analysts expect revenue of about $1.63 billion and EPS of $1.73.

The bullish case is easy to see. Ciena makes the optical gear that moves data between and inside AI data centers, and demand has been overflowing. Last quarter, revenue grew 40% year over year, earnings nearly quadrupled, and the order backlog hit a record $7.7 billion.

Management raised its full-year outlook and said the only real limit on growth right now is how much it can supply. Another healthy quarter looks very likely. But as we saw from the last quarter, that doesn’t necessarily mean the stock will surge. When Ciena posted those Q2 numbers in June, it beat estimates and raised guidance, and the stock still fell sharply. After a run of more than 160% this year, a strong performance was already the expectation.

The Part That Gets Less Attention

Ciena’s growth has become heavily tied to a small group of cloud giants. Direct cloud revenue jumped around 70% last quarter and now makes up close to half of total sales. Going into earnings, that concentration is what I’ll be watching rather than the headline numbers. When a handful of customers drive this much of the business, the whole case rests on them spending at the same pace, quarter after quarter. It also leaves Ciena exposed if any of them slow down, change course, or start designing more of their own optics.

So my view is that the headline numbers will almost certainly look strong, and the backlog will likely set another record. But after a 40% drop, a beat alone may simply not be enough. What matters is whether the demand is broadening beyond a few big names or narrowing onto them. That, more than the revenue line, is what decides where the stock goes next.

Ciena’s valuation is where the risk becomes hard to ignore. The forward GAAP P/E of 72.52x is about 25% above its 5-year average of 58.01x. The premium is much steeper as per the forward Price-to-sales of 8.46x, which is 163% above its 5-year average of 3.22x. So even after a 40% drop from the highs, the market is still paying up for the AI growth story. The EPS outlook helps explain part of that premium.

Analysts expect growth of 148% in 2026, 48% to 49% in 2027 and 2028, and then slowing to 19% in 2029. For the company worth over $50 billion, that is a strong growth trajectory. The balance sheet is not much of a concern. Ciena holds $1.20 billion in cash against $1.58 billion in debt, leaving it close to net neutral. Overall, the steep premium can be justified if the demand keeps compounding, and the record backlogs along with analysts’ growth estimate suggest it will. But since the company is relying heavily on a few large customers, a wobble from any of those could hurt Ciena’s stock further.

Ciena reports its fiscal third quarter on September 3.
