This is <strong>24% higher than last year<\/strong>, and a <strong>7% jump compared to the previous quarter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first half of the year (Jan\u2013June), HBL has made <strong>Rs34.4 billion<\/strong> in total profit, which is <strong>16% higher<\/strong> than the same time last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dividend announcement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the results, HBL also gave a pleasant surprise to investors:<br>A <strong>Rs4.5\/share dividend<\/strong>, bringing the total payout for the first half of 2025 to <strong>Rs9.0\/share<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strong deposit growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HBL\u2019s <strong>deposits reached a new record<\/strong>, now standing at over <strong>Rs5.2 trillion<\/strong>, up <strong>19%<\/strong> from last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> What helped earnings?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Net interest income (the difference between what the bank earns on loans vs. what it pays on deposits) grew by <strong>12% YoY<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-interest income also did well, thanks to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capital gains<\/strong> (up 184% YoY!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other income<\/strong> sources (up 58% YoY)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expenses were controlled, with operating expenses only rising <strong>9%<\/strong> YoY.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Some challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Interest earned<\/strong> dropped 20% YoY, mostly due to lower interest rates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fee income<\/strong> and <strong>dividend income<\/strong> declined during the quarter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The bank also set aside <strong>Rs1.9 billion<\/strong> as provisioning (a safety buffer for potential bad loans).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tax impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HBL paid a higher effective tax rate this time, <strong>53.9%<\/strong>, compared to <strong>49.5%<\/strong> last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By the numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Earnings per share (EPS)<\/strong>: Rs12.1 (quarter) | Rs24.4 (1HCY25)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cost-to-income ratio<\/strong>: 55.7% (slightly improved from 57.7% last year)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Net Interest Margin (NIM)<\/strong>: 4.5%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Book Value per Share<\/strong>: Rs307<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>HBL continues to show strong financial health, especially in deposit growth and profitability. While interest earnings are under pressure, the bank has done well in managing costs and boosting income from other sources.
